Start a Dead Battery With Jumper Cables

If you left your lights on and now have a dead battery, it's time to use your jumper cables. You'll need a second car with a good battery. Move the good car as close to possible to the dead car so that the jumper cables will reach. Turn off the good car and take out the jumper cables.

The jumper cables are red and black, with clamps on both ends. Attach the red clamp to the red terminal on the good battery and do the same with the black. Then attach the clamps to the dead battery, being careful not to touch the clamps together.

Turn on the engine of the good car to begin transferring power to the dead battery. Wait a few minutes and then try to start the dead car. If it starts, remove the jumper cables from both vehicles and allow the dead car to run for about twenty minutes.
